Perris police believe a suspicious package left at a local church this weekend was placed there maliciously to cause a panic, an investigator said today.
The package was found around 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at 29725 Bradley Road in Menifee.
It was described as about six inches long, four inches wide and three inches high, said Sgt. Doug Payne of the Perris Police Department. It was wrapped in a layer of thin, metallic paper, transparent plastic and duct tape and was sitting in plain view in a planter near some cars in the church’s parking lot, he said.
Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies responded, found the package and called the Sheriff’s Department Hazardous Device Team.
The team conducted an evaluation and found the package contained only a rock.
Police suspect the package was left as a malicious prank, Payne said.
”Why else would somebody wrap up a rock?” he said.
The Sheriff’s Department asked anybody with information to call the Perris Police Department at 951-210-1000
