With two sold out shows at Pechanga Resort & Casino and a diverse audience – young and not so young – it appeared Southwest Riverside was ready for some laughs on Saturday night.

Actor/comedian Joel McHale delivered with a 70 minute routine that jabbed at celebrity culture and poked some good-natured fun at his family.

McHale opened the show shouting a familiar phrase to fans of his E! Network show ‘The Soup’ – calling, “It’s Miley!” to the rousing cheers of the crowd.

But, you didn’t need to be well-versed with the talk show to be in on the jokes. McHale’s hilarious depictions of the Kardashians and Bruce Jenner’s seemingly helpless, hapless role as patriarch had the audience rolling from the start.

McHale spared no one, including Ryan Seacrest, who, according to McHale, was no taller than a random stool and is “waiting in the wings for Dick Clark’s job.”  Jokes about Seacrest had a way of popping up throughout the routine, and in some choice spots for good laughs.

He bemoaned the state of television programming – noting that MTV’s “Jersey Shore” is a “bigger disservice to Italian-Americans than Olive Garden and the mafia.” And he had no problem sharing with the audience the long list of celebrities he’s offended, including Hugh Hefner, Jennifer Lopez and Paula Abdul.

One of his biggest critics? According to McHale, it’s his grandma. And that is perhaps where he was most personable, poking fun at his family and casting a humorous light on common, everyday experiences with which everyone can identify.

His manner was easy and relaxed. He improvised with the crowd, occasionally drifting into observations that demonstrated a gift for characterizations, describing his mother-in-law’s voice as resembling a tugboat. And describing mama Kris Kardashian as existing in a vapor of lavender.

While the show was definitely geared for a late night audience, McHale reserved stronger language and adult situations for right time and biggest laughs.

Having grown up in Seattle, McHale is a graduate of the University of Washington and has enjoyed a steadily advancing career in film and television. He has appeared in such projects as “Spider-Man 2,” “Pushing Daisies” and “Lords of Dogtown.”

McHale can also be seen in the NBC comedy hit “Community” on Thursday nights at 8 p.m.
