Sequin gowns and crisp suits and bowties filled Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula Saturday during A Evening with our Stars, Mt. San Jacinto College Foundation’s annual fundraising gala.
The gala is the foundation’s second signature event to raise funds for student scholarships, faculty mini grants and other philanthropic endeavors. This year’s event brought in about 300 guests and 26 sponsors in support of the college and its students, according to college spokeswoman Karin Marriott.
The night included an elegant three-course dinner, performance competitions from students attending MSJC’s Menifee and San Jacinto campuses, an Alumni & Friends Awards ceremony, a silent auction that included art and entertainment packages and musical entertainment by Splash!, a high-energy dance and vocal ensemble.
Student performances were judged by a panel of guests including “Glee” star Jennifer Aspen; Gerry and Rosie Wilson, owners of Wilson Creek Winery; Bob Madden, KATY 101.3 FM host; Regina Stone, wife of Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone; and Corrine Garbani, Pechanga Tribal Council member.
Selvana Elwardany, took first place for an eye-popping belly dance routine, which granted her a $1,000 scholarship; Joey Hambrick won second place and a $500 scholarship after swooning the audience and judges singing an acoustic rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games;” Ashley Wetherill took third place with her refreshing musical lyrics and was granted a $250 scholarship; Sharon Snowden earned a $50 gift certificate courtesy of the MSJC Bookstore as did Evan Rayner and Karen Baldwin.
Alumni & Friends Association Awards went to Kathy Donnell, executive assistant to the MSJC Superintendent/President, for outstanding staff member of the year; Kay Ceniceros, former Riverside County supervisor and former dean of institutional advancement/executive director of the foundation, for outstanding community volunteer for the year; John Norman, former MSJC student and now MSJC faculty member, for outstanding alumni of the year.
MSJC’s third annual foundation gala is scheduled for next year on Feb. 12.
