A construction worker laying pipe 32 feet below ground today broke his clavicle while working and could not get back up the ladder, so firefighters went down and got him on a stretcher to pull him up.

The incident occurred about 3 p.m. at a site on Western Way, near Harley Knox Boulevard, according to Cal Fire Capt. Fernando Herrera said.

The 49-year-old man was guiding a pipe when it slipped and struck him on his right collarbone, fracturing it, Herrera said.

The trench was properly shored up by the construction company and there was no collapse, said Herrera.

“There was never an issue about him being trapped,” Herrera said. “He couldn’t get back up the ladder because of his fracture.”

The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, Herrera said.
