Late for the gym? Daylight Saving Time started today at 2 a.m.
It's time to turn clocks forward and replace batteries in smoke detectors.
Friday, March 12, 2010
Sunday is Daylight Saving Time and Cal Fire officials and the Riverside County Fire Department are reminding residents to replace batteries in their smoke detectors when turning clocks forward for this weekend’s time change.
CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Chief John R. Hawkins offers residents the following tips:
• Test smoke detectors once a month
• Replace batteries in smoke detectors twice a year
• Don’t disable smoke alarms, even temporarily
• Vacuum regularly or dust smoke detectors to keep them working properly
• Replace smoke detectors every 10 years
• Practice fire drills so everyone in the family knows what to do if the smoke detector goes off.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 66 percent of home fire deaths that occurred between 2003-2006, were in homes without a working smoke alarm.
If smoke alarms are powered by batteries, the batteries need to be replaced annually unless the battery is a long-life battery, fire officials said.
“A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you’re awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke,” Fire captain Fernando Herrera said.
