Two administrators have announced their plans to retire in December from the Temecula Valley Unified School District.

The retirements of Jeff Okun, assistant superintendent of business support services, and Chris Cordner, assistant superintendent of human resources development, will be effective Dec. 31.

Cordner, who came to the district 15 years ago to take the position of assistant superintendent, said the district has already began to conduct a search to fill the two positions.

Though the retirements are still months away, board members expressed gratitude for their years of service.

“It is going to be difficult to replace their skill set and it will take a while to fill that gap,” said Superintendent Tim Ritter during Tuesday’s board meeting.

Other administrative changes approved  by the board Tuesday include the reorganization of several principal and assistant principal positions.

Jona Hazlett will serve as principal at Vail Elementary following the resignation of Susan Yakich, according to district spokeswoman Melanie Norton.

Sandy McKay will serve as a principal on special assignment at the district office, with Christine Boyd taking her spot as principal at Abby Reinke Elementary. Boyd formerly served as assistant principal at Abby Reinke and Temecula Elementary.

Chrissy Wright will take over as principal at Susan LaVorgna Elementary after serving as an assistant principal at the site; fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Vanessa Wierenga will serve as assistant principal at LaVorgna and Tony Tobin elementary schools.

Keith Moore will go from a special education administrator on special assignment to acting as an assistant principal at Great Oak High School, and Breck Smith, who served as resource teacher at Great Oak, will work out of the district office as a program specialist for special education.

All changes became effective July 1, which is also the date Ritter took over as superintendent.
