A magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck the San Jacinto Mountains just south of Palm Springs today, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The possible aftershock was centered 11 miles south of Anza, and 25 miles south of Palm Springs. It hit at 8:14 a.m.

The quake was on the San Jacinto Fault, and was near the location of the numerous Borrego Springs-area earthquakes this year. Those quakes — including a magnitude 5.4 quake on July 7 — may have been triggered by the 7.2 Easter Sunday quake just across the international boundary near Mexicali, seismologists have said.
