A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of shooting at a vehicle carrying three people in Cathedral City, police said.
The shooting was reported at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the 33100 block of Via De Anza. The vehicle was going by the suspect “when he opened fire on their vehicle with a small-caliber handgun, then fled on foot into the neighborhood,” said Cathedral City police Sgt. Scott Sharpe.
One bullet struck the back of the vehicle, he said.
He said the victims knew the suspect, who lives in the area. Later that night, the suspect was seen walking with two other people, and police stopped them, Sharpe said.
“When the officers approached the juvenile suspect, they discovered a loaded .25 pistol hidden in the sleeve of his hoodie and he dropped it when the officers started to pat down for weapons,” the sergeant said.
The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, was booked at Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder and weapons violations, Sharpe said.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately determined.
