A suspect was shot to death by police during a car theft investigation at a Riverside apartment complex, police said today.
The 39-year-old man, whose name was being withheld pending family notification, was shot around 8:50 p.m. Monday while police were responding a report of a car theft in progress in the parking lot of the Peppertree Place Apartments at 7911 Arlington Ave., Riverside police Sgt. David Amador said.
The suspect died at 9:38 p.m. in the emergency room at Parkview Community Hospital Medical Center, according to the coroner’s office.
Amador said the man tried to drive off in the stolen car and stuck another vehicle near the apartment complex’s west gate.
It was unclear if the suspect was armed.
“As one of the patrol units exited the west gate, the suspect rammed the driver side of the police vehicle and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the sergeant said.
No other injuries were reported.
The personnel involved were put on administrative leave, which is police department policy in officer-involved shootings, Amador said.
