Officer Gomez with the Hemet Police Department responded to the store located in the 4600 block of West Florida Avenue and learned the suspect, who was with a small child,  tried to walk out of the store with hidden merchandise.

Loss prevention personnel stopped Salvador Barnes, 31, outside of the store, Sgt. Jeff Davis stated in a press release.

Barnes scuffled with loss prevention then gestured that he had a gun. Loss prevention backed off, fearing for their safety and the suspect took off running.

Loss prevention noticed a piece of mail with an address on it that Barnes dropped, Sgt. Davis added.

Officer Gomez went to a home in the 1900 block of East Devonshire Avenue and noticed the suspect and a small child inside the house.

Barnes fled out of the back of the home as officers knocked on the front door. After a short foot chase, the suspect was arrested.

He was booked into the Riverside County Jail for robbery, post community release revocation warrant and participation in a criminal street gang.

He is being held without bail.
