21-year-old woman killed in vehicle after being struck by drunk driver

A 21-year-old woman was killed today in Garden Grove while riding in a vehicle, driven by a suspected drunken woman, that struck a telephone pole.

The vehicle was heading north on Brookhurst Street about 3:30 a.m., when it left the roadway, struck the pole and then the front of a business at 13312 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale said.

Ariel Johnson of Lake Forest was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Paramedics took the driver, identified as 21-year-old Shauna Ahyen of Fountain Valley, and a second woman passenger to an area hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Nightengale said.

Ahyen was suspected of impaired driving and was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol.
