Hundreds of Temecula American Little Leaguers and their families braved cold and windy conditions on Saturday to take part in the Opening Day Ceremonies for their 2010 spring season.
And the Lake Elsinore Storm was on hand to help them celebrate the day.
Sean McCall, the radio voice of the Storm, was the master of ceremonies, bringing a rush of excitement to the event as he introduced teams and coaches.
The Storm’s popular mascot Thunder chimed in with light-hearted fun and antics.
Storm players outfielder Danny Payne and shortstop Chris Tremblay also took part in the festivities. They gave high-fives as players paraded onto the field and passed out trophies and handshakes to top hitters and pledge-earners from the league’s annual Hit-a-Thon that took place on Feb. 28.
Poignant moments included players from each division – Hunter Johnson, Zach Butler, Hunter Botkin, Trevor Picquelle, Charlie Morri and Jack Trimble – nominated by coaches and division coordinators to lead the crowd in the Little League pledge. Each player was chosen for his sportsmanship and winning attitude.
Two District 28 Tournament of Champions teams –Majors Nationals and AAA Padres — took the field to be honored for their 2009 championship titles. The 2009 All-Star teams also stepped forward to acknowledge the applause of the crowd.
Chad Hanna, President of the league’s title sponsor, Alert-All, a fire-safety company, took to the mound to throw out the first pitch of the season to Majors Red Sox catcher, Eric Sanchez.
A second VIP was also asked to step up to the plate. Juniors Diamondback manager Lou Camacho has a long history of service in TVALL. His 2007 and 2009 Tournament of Champions and 2009 All-Stars Championship wins and years of commitment to players in the league earned him special honors. Camacho threw out another ceremonial pitch to his son, Juniors Diamondbacks catcher David Camacho.

After McCall led a rousing cry of “play ball,” from the league, the 2010 spring season got underway, with games scheduled in both the Majors and AAA divisions.
Manager Jim Roos’ Majors Astros edged the Nationals in a 6-3 win. And the Majors Angels lost their season opener to manager Tony Sanchez’ Majors Red Sox, but not without a fight. Angels’ power hitters Justin Pepple and Chase Pymm each unloaded with home run blasts over the fence at Ronald Reagan Sports Park in Temecula.
Finally, the AAA Hooks enjoyed their first season win against the Bees. And the AAA Iron Pigs secured a first win against the Rockhounds, despite rainy weather that forced an early call of the game.
