BetMGM Canada isn't one license — it's two, four years apart. The sportsbook and casino launched in Ontario on April 4, 2022, and didn't reach a second province until Alberta's market opened on July 13, 2026. Everywhere else in the country, there's no BetMGM account to legally open, regardless of how familiar the brand looks from US sports broadcasts.
Ontario: Four Years of Building, Not Just a Launch Date
BetMGM went live in Ontario the day the AGCO and iGaming Ontario opened Canada's first competitive private-operator market. It didn't stay static from there. In August 2024, BetMGM launched a branded “Wheel of Fortune” online casino in the province — its second brand-led casino launch in North America — and in January 2026 it signed a content-supply deal with Gaming Corps, described by that company as its biggest agreement to date in Ontario. By one 2023 industry estimate from Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, BetMGM held around a fifth of Ontario's regulated online gambling market.
Alberta: A Different Regulator, A Wider Registration
Alberta took a different path to the same question. The AGLC published its gaming-registrations list on May 1, 2026 with BetMGM already on it, ahead of the province's July 13 launch date. Day-to-day market operations run through the newly created Alberta iGaming Corporation, a structure Ontario doesn't use. One detail worth noting: BetMGM's Alberta registration covers casino, sportsbook, and poker — a broader scope than its typical US state license, where online poker isn't part of the BetMGM product at all.
Not covered by either license: British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Atlantic provinces, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut. Those provinces route online gambling through a single Crown corporation, and none has licensed BetMGM.
Is BetMGM Legit in Canada?
Where it's licensed, yes — and the ownership trail is the same one that backs the US product. BetMGM is a 50/50 joint venture between MGM Resorts International, a Nasdaq-listed casino operator, and Entain, listed in London. Both provinces require a named regulator and a real operating agreement before a brand goes live; BetMGM has both in Ontario and Alberta. That paper trail stops at each province's border — it doesn't make an account opened from Manitoba or Nova Scotia any more legitimate.
Is BetMGM Safe Outside Ontario or Alberta?
Not through a licensed account, because there isn't one to open from the other eleven provinces and territories. Routing around that with a VPN or a foreign sign-up breaks BetMGM's own terms and leaves a player with no regulator to appeal to if something goes wrong. The honest answer for the rest of Canada is to wait for a province to open a market the way Ontario and Alberta did — not to pretend a workaround carries the same protection those two licenses actually provide.
Who It Fits
Adults of legal age physically located in Ontario or Alberta who want a sportsbook and casino backed by a publicly traded operator on both sides of the joint venture. Readers elsewhere in Canada get an honest gray-zone answer, not a workaround. Treat any deposit as entertainment spending, not income.
