BetMGM Idaho is not a license pending somewhere in a regulator’s queue. It is not even a tribal negotiation underway the way a few other dark states on this site can at least point to. Idaho’s constitution closes the door on both a BetMGM sportsbook and a BetMGM casino at once, and unlike Utah’s blanket ban, Idaho does allow other forms of gambling — just never the casino-style kind BetMGM’s two products are built from.
Is BetMGM Legal in Idaho?
Article III, Section 20 of the Idaho Constitution limits legal gambling to three enacted categories: a state lottery, pari-mutuel wagering on horse and dog races, and charitable bingo or raffles. A 1992 amendment, approved by voters, added a line that does the real work here — none of those three categories may include casino games or their electronic imitations. A sportsbook and an online casino are both casino-style products by definition, so the amendment rules out BetMGM’s entire catalog in one clause, not two separate fights.
Three carve-outs, zero casinos: lottery, pari-mutuel racing, charitable bingo or raffles — that is the complete list the Idaho Constitution allows, and the 1992 amendment makes sure none of them can be stretched into a casino game. There is no fourth category waiting for a statute.
Why Idaho’s Tribal Casinos Can’t Add a BetMGM Skin
BetMGM’s actual growth model leans heavily on casino partners: MGM Grand Detroit backs its Michigan license, and several other states route BetMGM through a tribal or commercial casino’s existing gaming authority. Idaho has tribal casinos too — but a federal court ruling in Idaho’s tribal-gaming dispute held that the state is only required to negotiate compacts for the Class III games its own constitution already permits. Since the constitution excludes casino games outright, Idaho tribes operate lottery-authorized video gaming terminals under a 2002 voter initiative instead of a real casino floor. That is a materially different product under a different legal theory, and it gives a willing tribe no compact scope to plug a BetMGM sportsbook or casino into, even if MGM wanted to strike a deal tomorrow.
March 2026: the Idaho Attorney General’s office joined a 39-state coalition defending states’ authority to prohibit sports betting outright — a stance aimed at the broader prediction-market fight playing out elsewhere, but one that signals Idaho has no interest in loosening its own line either.
Is BetMGM Legit in Idaho?
As a company, yes, and Idaho’s law doesn’t change that. BetMGM is a 50/50 joint venture between MGM Resorts International, a publicly traded casino operator, and Entain, the London-listed group behind Ladbrokes and Coral, running licensed sportsbooks in 23 states plus D.C. and online casinos in four more. Idaho simply isn’t on either map, and that absence reflects the state’s constitutional structure, not anything irregular about the operator.
Is BetMGM Safe to Use From Idaho?
There’s nothing licensed to use, safely or otherwise. BetMGM enforces geolocation at every state line where it isn’t licensed, and Idaho is one of them — a real-money sign-up attempt from an Idaho IP address or GPS location should get blocked the same way it would at any other unlicensed border. Idaho also has no gaming commission that would oversee BetMGM even if a product did somehow reach the state, which is simply the normal condition here, not a red flag about the brand.
No Bill, No Ballot
Unlike Nebraska, which has a ballot measure on the table, or states running an active tribal-exclusivity fight, Idaho has neither moving. No lawmaker has introduced a sports-betting bill since the Supreme Court cleared the way for states to legalize it in 2018. The closest Idaho came to loosening any gambling rule was 2018’s Proposition 1, a historic-horse-racing-terminal measure voters rejected 53.8% to 46.2% after the Coeur d’Alene Tribe argued the machines were casino slots by another name — the same constitutional clause that blocks BetMGM today. Nothing in the 2026 legislative session changed that picture.
Who It Fits
Nobody in Idaho gets a BetMGM sportsbook or casino, in an app or through a tribal partner, and there’s no pending bill or compact negotiation to watch the way there is in some other restricted states. Idaho adults looking for a legal wager have pari-mutuel racing, the state lottery, and charitable gaming — not a BetMGM product. Treat any wager as entertainment spending, not income. 1-800-GAMBLER if it stops feeling that way.
