DraftKings Review: The Legal Book, and Only Where It’s Licensed

DraftKings is a Nasdaq-listed, state-licensed sportsbook — and that sentence is doing all the work. DraftKings is what the offshore pages on this site keep using as the comparison: a named US license, a geofence, a regulator who can fine the operator. That only holds in the states where the sportsbook is actually live. A “DraftKings California” query is not a softer version of “DraftKings New Jersey.” It is a different product question, and the answer in California is that the sportsbook is not there.

The Footprint, Not the Brand Ad

Founded 2012 in Boston by Jason Robins, Matt Kalish, and Paul Liberman. Nasdaq-listed (DKNG) since April 2020. As of August 2026 the sportsbook is live in 27 states plus Washington D.C.; Arkansas joined on March 20, 2026. Online casino is five states: Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia. DFS is older and wider. Three products, three maps. State pages pick one and say so.

Not live as a sportsbook: California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, and the rest of the dark list. Do not write a “how to sign up” guide for those states. Restricted means restricted.

Is DraftKings Safe?

In a live sportsbook state, as safe as US consumer-facing gambling gets: license, geolocation, self-exclusion, a state agency on the other end of a complaint. That is a different sentence from “betting is a good idea.” It is also a different sentence from Bovada. Do not blend them.

Who It Fits

As of August 2026 the sportsbook list is Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, plus Washington D.C. If your state is not on that list, the honest answer is no.

Is DraftKings legit?

Yes. Public company (DKNG), state regulators, published financials. Legitimacy is not the question on a dark-state page — availability is.

Does DraftKings have an online casino?

In five states: Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Everywhere else, “DraftKings Casino” is not a thing you can open.

Is DraftKings the same as DraftKings DFS?
