FanDuel New Zealand was never a live product, but as of June 2025 the question stopped being hypothetical and became a matter of statute. The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 didn't single FanDuel out — it rewrote the rules for every offshore sportsbook at once, and FanDuel landed on the wrong side of that line along with the rest of them.
The Law That Settled the Question
Royal Assent came on 27 June 2025, and the amendment took effect the very next day: TAB NZ became the sole lawful provider of online sports and racing bets to anyone physically in New Zealand. It isn't a licensing preference or a tax structure — it is a straight monopoly, enforced by the Department of Internal Affairs, which had already sent enforcement notices to offshore firms before the law even came into force. A FanDuel account opened from a New Zealand IP address isn't a gray-area workaround under this law; it's the exact thing the amendment was written to stop.
Two separate laws, two separate products: the 2025 Racing Industry Amendment Act covers sports and racing bets. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, in force since 1 May 2026, is a different law covering a different product — online casino play — and is auctioning 15 licences while offshore casino operators run on a transitional clock to 1 December 2026.
Is FanDuel Legit in New Zealand?
FanDuel being a real, Flutter-owned, publicly accountable US operator doesn't change the New Zealand answer. Legitimacy and availability are different questions here: FanDuel has no DIA licence, no New Zealand entity, and a sportsbook that is geofenced to US states plus Ontario and Alberta in Canada — built for those markets, not this one.
Not the Same Story as Australia
It's easy to assume FanDuel has some back-door link into New Zealand the way its parent Flutter does into Australia through Sportsbet. It doesn't. TAB NZ's online betting operation runs through a commercial partnership with Entain — a competing gambling group, not Flutter — under a deal expected to pay TAB NZ roughly NZ$100 million. There is no ownership thread connecting FanDuel to the one operator New Zealand law now allows.
Who It Fits
Nobody in New Zealand right now. TAB NZ is the only lawful online sports and racing book, and the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 is still mid-rollout toward its own licensed list. FanDuel remains a US and Canadian-provinces product. None of this is encouragement to bet more through whichever channel is technically legal — treat it as entertainment, and the Gambling Helpline (0800 654 655) is there if it stops feeling like that.
