BetMGM New Zealand doesn't exist as a product — no license, no app, no account a Kiwi bettor could actually open. That part is unremarkable; BetMGM has no presence in most countries this site has checked. What makes New Zealand different is how close the ownership thread runs. Entain, the London-listed company that owns the other half of the BetMGM joint venture, isn't a distant minority shareholder here — it is the company running the country's legal betting monopoly.
Is BetMGM Legal in New Zealand?
No, and since June 2025 the law has been explicit about it rather than just silent. An amendment to the Racing Industry Act 2020 took effect on 28 June 2025, handing TAB NZ the sole legal right to accept online sports and racing bets from anyone physically in the country. Every offshore sportsbook landed on the wrong side of that line at once — BetMGM was never singled out, it was simply never in the running. Online casino play sat in a separate gray zone until the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force on 1 May 2026, building a licensed market from nothing. BetMGM has not applied for a license under either regime.
The licensing math so far: New Zealand's casino license auction closed in October 2026 after 10 rounds among 32 bidders, pricing slots at roughly NZ$15 million each. Eleven entities — Entain, Stake, and Betway among them — won the right to file full applications for one of a maximum 15 licenses, with the DIA expecting to issue final awards in early 2027.
Entain Already Runs the Monopoly
This is the detail that separates New Zealand from BetMGM's other overseas near-misses. In Australia, parent-level owner Flutter separately owns Sportsbet — a sibling brand with no operational link to FanDuel. In New Zealand, Entain signed a 25-year commercial partnership directly with TAB NZ to run its online betting operations: a 50/50 gross-profit split, an upfront payment reported around NZ$160 million, and full responsibility for marketing and running the books. It operates under the TAB NZ name and Entain's own Betcha brand, launched in August 2024 — never under BetMGM's.
Is BetMGM Legit in New Zealand?
BetMGM is a legitimate, regulated operator in the markets where it actually holds a license — that reputation just has nothing to do with New Zealand. There is no BetMGM entity registered here, no DIA license, and no product built to take a New Zealand bet. Legit and available are different questions, and for this country the honest answer to the second one is still no.
Where This Could Go Next
Entain has publicly said it wants roughly half of New Zealand's future online casino demand and sees an advantage in cross-selling between TAB's existing sports-betting base and a new casino license. If that bid succeeds in 2027, it would still run under Entain's New Zealand brands, not BetMGM's — MGM Resorts' joint-venture name has no announced path into this market even as its co-owner moves to dominate it.
Who It Fits
Nobody, today. TAB NZ and Betcha are the only lawful online sports and racing options, and the online casino market is still mid-auction toward its first licenses. BetMGM remains a US-and-two-Canadian- provinces product with no New Zealand footprint under its own name. None of this is encouragement to find a workaround — treat gambling as entertainment, and the Gambling Helpline (0800 654 655) is the next call if it stops feeling that way.
