BetMGM Connecticut isn't a scaled-down version of the sportsbook that runs in Arizona or New Jersey. It's nothing at all — no app, no license, no casino skin. The reason has nothing to do with BetMGM's size or reputation. Connecticut built its 2021 gambling law around exactly three seats, and five years later, BetMGM still doesn't hold one of them.
Three Slots, and BetMGM Isn't One of Them
Public Act 21-23, signed by Governor Ned Lamont in May 2021, legalized online sports wagering, online casino gaming, and fantasy contests — but it didn't open a licensing process any operator could apply to. It named three parties outright: the Mohegan Tribe, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation. Each one pairs with exactly one commercial sportsbook brand. There is no fourth seat written into the statute, and no mechanism for BetMGM — or anyone else — to simply file an application the way it could in Ohio or Massachusetts.
Who actually holds the three seats: Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment partners with FanDuel. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe partners with DraftKings. The Connecticut Lottery Corporation's seat went to Rush Street Interactive's PlaySugarHouse at the October 2021 launch, then changed hands to Fanatics Sportsbook, which soft-launched December 18, 2023 as PlaySugarHouse wound down. That reshuffle is the only time a new brand has entered the Connecticut market — and it happened by replacing an existing partner, not by the state adding a slot.
Is BetMGM Legit? Yes — Just Not Reachable Here
Being locked out of Connecticut says nothing about whether BetMGM is trustworthy. It's a 50/50 joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Entain, operating under real state licenses in 23 states plus D.C., with regulators who can and do audit it. Connecticut residents just happen to live in one of the states where that license roster doesn't include a Connecticut line item, because the state never created one for BetMGM to fill.
Is BetMGM Safe to Try From a Connecticut Address?
There's nothing to secure, because there's nothing running. BetMGM's geolocation system flags a Connecticut IP or GPS signal and shuts the door, the same control it applies at every other state line where it has no license. The real safety concern for a Connecticut reader is a counterfeit site or app branding itself “BetMGM Connecticut” — that product does not exist, so anything claiming to be it is not BetMGM.
Timeline: May 2021 — Public Act 21-23 signed. October 19, 2021 — market launches with FanDuel, DraftKings, and PlaySugarHouse. November 2023 — Fanatics announced as the Lottery's new partner. December 18, 2023 — Fanatics soft launches, PlaySugarHouse stops taking new wagers. 2026 — same three seats, same three brands, no BetMGM.
What Connecticut Bettors Actually Get
FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics Sportsbook are the entire legal online market, by statute, and all three run under active DCP oversight with real operating histories here. That's a narrower menu than a 23-state brand like BetMGM might suggest is normal elsewhere, but narrower isn't the same as unregulated — Connecticut just decided three was the number.
Who It Fits
Nobody, yet — not as a BetMGM product. Connecticut readers who want a licensed, regulated online sportsbook already have three real options; BetMGM simply isn't one of them, and nothing short of new legislation or another partner swap changes that.
