A Sleeper review has to start by admitting Sleeper is not one thing. It began in 2015 as a social-first fantasy football app that made Yahoo and ESPN's league tools look ancient. It is now also a pick-em DFS product and, since early 2026, a federally regulated prediction market. Those are three different legal footprints stapled to one login, and a "Sleeper {state}" search deserves an answer that keeps them separate instead of blending them into one reassurance.
Where Sleeper Actually Came From
San Francisco-based, founded by Nan Wang, Weixi Yen, and Ken Wang, originally as Blitz Studios. The company has raised roughly $67 million across five rounds, with a $40 million Series C led by Andreessen Horowitz. For most of its life Sleeper's business was league management — the pick-em DFS layer (Sleeper Picks) came later and is what most "is Sleeper legal" searches are actually asking about.
Three products, three maps. Sleeper Picks (single-entry pick-em), PicksVS (head-to-head), and Daily Drafts each have their own state-by-state paid-entry list — a state can allow one and block another. Sleeper Markets, the prediction product, follows a completely separate federal/state track tied to Kalshi's exchange, not the DFS list.
Is Sleeper Legit — and Is Sleeper Picks Legal Where You Live?
Legit as a business: yes, with a decade of operating history and institutional funding behind it. Legal for paid Sleeper Picks entries: only in the states where that specific product is live. About 20 states — Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington among them — currently do not allow Sleeper's paid-entry DFS contests. Sleeper enforces this with geolocation, the same way most DFS operators do.
Sleeper Markets is the newer, higher-stakes legal story. The National Futures Association approved Sleeper as a Futures Commission Merchant and swap firm on January 9, 2026, ending a lawsuit Sleeper had filed against the CFTC months earlier over a stalled application. Team Picks, the in-app trading product, launched in February 2026 and routes sports event contracts through Kalshi's CFTC-designated exchange rather than Sleeper taking the other side of the trade itself. That is real federal registration — it is not the same as every state agreeing sports event contracts should be sold to its residents, which is an active fight in several state capitals.
Who Sleeper Actually Fits
Fantasy players who already live in the Sleeper app for league management and want a DFS product without leaving it, in a state where Sleeper Picks takes paid entries. Separately, traders curious about sports event contracts who want that routed through an NFA-approved FCM rather than an offshore exchange. It fits neither group in a state where the relevant product is dark, and it is not a sportsbook substitute or a way to make money in either form.
